from Philippe Varin in 2014. Two internal sources at PSA have told Automotive News that Tavares is being favored for the position.
The plan would bring Tavares into PSA briefly as COO, while Varin focused on negotiations with Dongfeng to buy as much as a fifth of the company. Before any of that happened, Tavares would have to be approved by the PSA board of directors.
Tavares would come to PSA in a time of crisis. In 2012, the company sold 8% to General Motors and nearly merged with Opel, and it is negotiating to sell another major portion to Dongfeng. In the first half of 2013, it had a €510 million ($690 million) loss. It is also closing the Aulnay factory and eliminating 11,200 jobs. The management board has shrunk from six to four members.
