into a single unit, is also posting growth, but a weakening Smart is pulling the company down. Smart sales fell 5.2% for August to 5,710 cars and are down 6.4% for the year with 65,256 cars sold. For Mercedes-Benz Cars, that means August sales of 114,127 cars, up 17.2%, and sales from January to August of 984,900 cars, up 8.1%.

“We again posted double-digit growth with over 18 percent in August and are thus continuing on our growth course for the second half of the year, in which we want to grow more strongly than in the first”, said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Regionally in August, Mercedes-Benz Cars saw 12% growth in Europe, 20.5% growth in North America and 28.6% growth in Asia. It led luxury car sales in Germany, the United States and Japan and set a new monthly sales record in the US with 24,761 cars sold.

Mercedes is still trying to grow in China. In August, it sold 18,087 cars there, but that represented 27.3% growth over August 2012.
