Cars sales increased 2% in October to 511,400 cars worldwide and is up 3.4% for the year from January to October to 4.88 million cars. However, those numbers belie the fact that China is the only major market where VW is seeing growth. Its sales are falling in the rest of the world.

"Deliveries by the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand made satisfactory progress in October despite the ongoing economic uncertainty in some regions. We continued to grow in the Asia-Pacific region where deliveries in China, our largest single market, remained very encouraging", said Christian Klingler, VW head of sales and marketing.

Europe remains a big challenge for VW Cars. It has sold 1.37 million cars in Europe from January to October, down 5.3%. Sales in Western Europe dipped 5.3% in October, and German sales have dropped 7.4% from January to October. Russian and Central European sales have also fallen this year.

North American and South American sales are also falling. From January to October, North American sales have fallen 0.9% to 513,100 cars. Of those, 343,000 went to the United States, a 4% drop.

South American sales are down 13.9% from January to October to 602,500 cars. Of those, 454,000 cars went to Brazil, down 16.9%.

To offset the waning sales in Europe and the Americas, sales in Asia are up 16.2% this year to 2.2 million cars. Of those, 2.02 million have gone to China. Sales in India are also down 11% for the year to 51,000 cars.
