European Car of the Year 2014 Nominees Announced

The winner will not be announced until March

The European Car of the Year has released its nominees for 2014. It selected 30 cars from a provisional list of all of the new cars that would be on sale by the end of 2013. The cars had to be all new generations, not refreshed models

To be nominated the cars has to be on sale in 2013 in five or more European markets and have the prospect of selling 5,000 units a year.

The list will be further whittled down from two rounds of voting. The first vote will take the list from 30 cars down to the finalists and will be announced in mid December. From there, a winner will be selected that will be revealed on March 3, 2014.

The European Car of the Year is voted on by 58 jury members made up of auto journalists from major publications to 22 European countries. The winner is decided based on design, comfort, safety, economy, handling, performance, functionality, environmental requirements, driver satisfaction, technical innovation and value for money.

The provisional list is made with each jury member getting to vote one car on the list. Multiple members can vote on the same car, which means that there can be fewer than 58 cars on the list of nominees. For the second round to decide the finalists, each voter has 25 points to spread to at least five cars.
