The EU Parliament has ruled that all cars sold in the EU must be able to contact emergency services in an accident. 

The ruling states that when the sensors indicate that a crash has happened the car will make an eCall to emergency services automatically. The car's location and the crash's time will be sent to local emergency workers. 

It predicts that 0.7% of cars on the road now automatically contact emergency services. It says that the system costs €100 per car and predicts that it will save 2,500 lives a year. The EU states will have to upgrade their emergency systems to receive the signals from eCall. 

The EU Parliament plenary passed the proposal on July 6.
