Euro NCAP Tests 11 New Cars; Six Five-Star Ratings

It tested cars from seven classes

The new Ghibli received a five-star rating

Euro NCAP tested 10 new cars and did one reassessment in its latest test. Among the cars tested, six cars received a five-star rating.

The biggest problem among all of the cars was pedestrian safety. Many of the cars had poor rating around the endge of the hood or around the windshield. 

The latest test included vehicles from the small family, small MPV, executive, small off-road 4X4, supermini and business and family van classes. 

BMW i3

The BMW i3 received a four-star rating. The new electric compact from BMW has an 86% adult rating, 81% child rating, 57% pedestrian rating and 55% safety assist rating. Euro NCAP's biggest complaints were its marginal whiplash protection, and that the hood offered power pedestrian protection.

Ford EcoSport

The Ford EcoSport received a four-star rating. It was rated 93% for adult safety, 77% for child safety, 58% for pedestrian protection and 55% for safety assist systems. Euro NCAP praised its adult safety, but a 3-year-old child would receive chest injuries in an accident. The bumper offers poor pedestrian protection.

Ford Tourneo Connect

The Ford Tourneo Connect received a five-star rating. It was rated 94% for adult safety, 85% for child safety, 62% for pedestrian protection and 70% for safety assist systems. Euro NCAP's only major problem with the car was that the bumper was not very safe for pedestrian safety.

Infiniti Q50

The Infiniti Q50 received a five-star rating. It was rated 86% for adult safety, 85% for child safety, 67% for pedestrian protection and 81% for safety assist systems. During the test, the side air bags deployed incorrectly, which penalized the car. It praised the car's active raising hood in pedestrian collisions.

Maserati Ghibli

The new Maserati Ghibli received a five-star rating. It was rated 95% for adult safety, 79% for child safety, 74% for pedestrian protection and 81% for safety assist systems. It only received a marginal rating for whiplash protection. It had very good pedestrian safety, except for around the windshield.

Mazda 3

The new Mazda 3 received a five-star rating. It was rated 93% for adult safety, 86% for child safety, 65% for pedestrian protection and 81% for safety assist systems. In the severe side impact test, it has weak chest protection. Child safety was quite good. The front edge of the hood provided poor pedestrian protection.

Mercedes-Benz Citan Kombi

The Mercedes-Benz Citan Kombi received a reassessment and scored a four-star rating. It scored 79% in adult safety, 81% in child safety, 56% in pedestrian safety and 70% in safety assistance systems. It previously has received a three-star rating. The side impact air bags were improved.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV received a five-star rating with an 88% adult safety rating, 84% child safety rating, 64% child safety rating and 81% safety assist rating. The lower legs in the adult test showed marginal safety, but all other body regions had good safety. The front edge of the hood was poor in pedestrian safety.

Nissan Note

The Nissan Note received a four-star rating with an 88% adult safety rating, 84% child safety rating, 64% child safety rating and 81% safety assist rating. The steering column and center console were found to pose a safety risk, and it provided poor chest safety for adults.

Peugeot 308

The Peugeot 308 received a five-star rating with a 92% adult rating, 79% child rating, 64% pedestrian rating and 81% safety assist rating. The safety test for a three-year-old child showed excessive force in the neck. The windshield had poor pedestrian protection.

Volkswagen T5 Transporter Kombi

The Volkswagen T5 Transporter Kombi received a four-star rating with a 79% adult rating, 74% child rating, 32% pedestrian rating and 57% safety assist rating. Euro NCAP thought that the dashboard could move around in crashes, and the adult safety rating was marginal in severe side impact tests.
