Rüsselsheim factory. It is one of the largest fields on solar panels in Europe and covers the area of 32 soccer fields. It will create 7.3 million kilowatt hours of energy for the factory and reduce emissions by 3,150 tons of CO2 per year.

The electricity is used by the Rüsselsheim factory for vehicle production and excess energy goes into the public grid of Stadtwerke Mainz.

GM already has solar arrays at its factories in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Zaragoza, Spain. All of the installations, including the newest one in Rüsselsheim, total 19.1kWh of energy production. They save 8,200 tons of CO2 a year

GM plans to have 125 megawatts of renewable energy at its factories in Europe by 2020. The Kaiserslautern and Zaragoza sites are two of the largest rooftop solar arrays in the world.

“The projects we undertake in Europe are great examples of the way we roll sustainable practices into our manufacturing process. We seek out renewable energy opportunities around the world to help clean the grid, improve our bottom line, and reduce our impact on the environment," said GM Vice President of Sustainability Mike Robinson.
