are recalling a total of 3.4 million vehicles due to a fault found in the passenger-side airbags supplied by Takata. The airbags could suddenly deploy and cause injury to passengers due to a faulty inflator. Takata says that it is a manufacturing defect that affects vehicles built between November 2000 and March 2004. The scope of the recall is worldwide.

Toyota is responsible for about 1.73 million of the cars being recalled, Honda has 1.14 million cars, Nissan has 480,000 recalled cars, and Mazda is recalling 45,463 cars.

Toyota has reported that it has had five instances of the airbags deploying, but no one has been injured.

Takata estimates 2 million airbags will need replaced, but the larger 3.4 million figure comes from automakers recalling cars to inspect whether they have the faulty airbags.

This is not the first time that Takata has had a recall on its airbags. Honda had to recall 437,763 cars in 2010 to inspect faulty Takata airbags.
