is taking the next step toward having an autonomous car on sale with a pilot project with self-driving Volvos on public roads in Sweden in 2014. One hundred self-driving Volvos will take part in the pilot project on 50km of public roads around Gothenburg, Sweden. The first autonomous cars will not be on the roads until 2017.
The Swedish Government is also funding the project, and the goal is for Sweden and Volvo to become the leaders in autonomous driving technology. The test will include studies on how autonomous driving affects traffic efficiency and road safety and study the infrastructure requirements of autonomous cars.
“Autonomous vehicles are an integrated part of Volvo Cars’ as well as the Swedish government’s vision of zero traffic fatalities. This public pilot represents an important step towards this goal,” said Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car Group.
The cars will be put through all types of traffic situations from highways to city streets. The vehicles will be able to take on all driving functions, and drivers can take over control whenever they wish. All of the models will be new models on Volvo’s SPA platform
