Toyota introduced the Corolla E110 series, that is, the eighth generation Corolla, on the markets in 1998. Although exterior design modifications were hardly noticeable, technological progresses were made and new engines and further safety elements were added. Changes made to the Corolla resulted on a somewhat lighter car, particularly because of its aluminum-block engine.

The Corolla E110 cars were built with 1.8-liter front engines worldwide and 1.3 or 2.0 L front engines in Japan. The Corolla variants could produce from 88 to 165 hp. This car’s transmission could be driven either by a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
