Debuted in 2011, this Toyota iQ 1.0 Essential belongs to the 1st generation of the iQ model. Powered by a straight 3 996cc engine, this car has a power output of 68 hp. When compared to other versions in this generation, the iQ 1.0 Essential is fitted with the smallest engine. This front wheel drive version has a manual transmission with a 5-speed gearbox. The car reaches 100km/h in 14.7 seconds at a top speed of 150 km/h. This microcar produces 99 g/km of CO2 emissions. It has a combined fuel consumption of 4.3 l/100km. The version of the iQ is the most environmentally friendly out of the range, emitting least CO2. As for the seating arrangement, it offers space for up to 4 persons. The Toyota iQ 1.0 Essential features rack & pinion steering, at the front it wears disc brakes and at the rear drum brakes.

The Toyota iQ was first presented at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show as a concept vehicle. In 2008 at the Geneva Auto Show it was introduced and set to go into production and reach the european market in January 2009. The iQ is available with a 5- or 6- speed manual transmission and models with the 1.33 litre engine already include start/stop system.
