Toyota announced it is ready to put end to the 18-year absence of the World Rally Championship (WRC). President Akio Toyoda revealed that the brand will return to the WRC in 2017.
The Japanese brand will develop over the next two years its' new rally car based on the Yaris. After so many years away from competition Toyota will have, besides preparing the car, to carefully assemble a team that may be at the same level of the brand history in the competition.
Back in the 90's, Toyota won four individual and three manufacturer world titles and had great figures behind the wheel, as Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankhunen.
The Toyota Yaris WRC is already being developed and has completed the preliminary testing program in Europe on tarmac and gravel. The data collected during these sessions will allow to indicate the path in the development of the vehicle.
The car is equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter direct injection called "Global Race Engine" which has an output above 300hp. The Yaris WRC chassis was designed with advanced simulation, testing and manufacturing techniques.
