Volkswagen premiered at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show the Cross Coupé, a concept SUV with innovative AWD and plug-in hybrid power train that points out some of the future design cues of VW models. The design developed by Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff brings the fusion between a four-door coupé and a compact SUV.
The Cross Coupé features a very long bonnet, a completely new front section design and the passenger compartment is placed way back and has a very low window line. The front section is where the most innovative cues in term of design have been adopted. For example the characteristic horizontal lines of the ‘Volkswagen visage’ have been used to merge the two xenon twin headlamps. The two chrome fins are used to emphasize the width of the vehicle and are part of an entirely new type of lighting concept. The lower chrome bar contains the daytime running light, and the fin above it contains the direction indicators.
At the back the narrow back window size influences the rear design of the Cross Coupé giving it a very typical coupé look. At the top it features a spoiler that besides optically extending the roof surface optimizes the aerodynamics of the SUV.
The Concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show has been equipped with a hybrid system consisting of three different motors. Under the bonnet the Cross Coupé features a 110 kW TSI petrol engine which delivers maximum torque of 210 Nm and an electric motor with an output of 40 kW and 180 Nm of torque. These two engines power the front axle. When using all-wheel drive or driving on pure electric power mode, the concept is equipped with a third engine, a second electric motor, which generates up to 85 kW and develops torque of 270 Nm. Together these engines have a combined output of 195kW.
Running solely on electric power the Cross Coupé can drive up to 45 kilometres, depending on conditions, producing no CO2 emissions. As for the TSI engine its fuel consumption is told to be 2.7 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of 62 g/km.
In terms of performance the Cross Coupé hasn’t been forgotten and is able to reach a top speed of 201km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7 seconds. Solely on electric energy the concept SUV’s top speed is lowered to120 km/h.
