Built since 2001 the X-Trail is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan. It was launched in the same period other companies released their own SUVs, including the Ford Escape, the Mazda Tribute, the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.
In terms of size the X-Trail is positioned below the truck-based Xterra and Pathfinder and its second generation shares its platform with the Rogue. The first generation used the Nissan FF-S platform, shared with the Nissan Almera and the Nissan Primera.
In 2007 Nissan introduced the second generation of the X-Trail at the Geneva Motor Show. This generation is slightly larger than the previous model and is based on the Nissan C platform. In 2010 a facelifted version of the X-Trail was introduced.
