A new Rolls Royce takes on an old Bentley:
So, the new Rolls Royce Ghost is a better car than the old Bentley Arnage. Full stop, the end, move on we should be saying. And that would largely be the correct verdict if I didn’t like the character of the old girl with the flying ‘B’.
It is interesting that it is still the Bentley that is the more sporting of the two, it feels smaller but more brutal at the same time. Not only that but the old 6.75 litre twin turbo V8 is monstrous in comparison to the little 6.6 Litre V8 in the Rolls. Torque is the key here because in terms of outright horse power the newer car is far superior.
It is interesting that on the way to the north Norfolk coast last night I didn’t have much fun in the Ghost but the Arnage this morning on the way back was superb. Worse in almost every way, but superb all the same. In fact, I would go as far as to say that the Arnage is pretty hopeless by modern standards. But character wins for me with this one.
I am looking forward to the Mulsanne as I hope it keeps some of the character of the old girl while bringing the rest of the car close to the imperious standards of Rolls Royce’ recent efforts. It could be a winner!
p.s. Max the Cocker Spaniel preferred the Rolls Royce, he felt that there was little pleasure to be had from 737lb/ft of the Bentley from the passenger foot well, but enjoyed the thick carpets in the Rolls Royce.
