*Update* Twenty-four hours and a second surgery later, doctors say that Michael Schumacher's condition has improved slightly.

The doctors did a scan on his brain and saw that he was stabilizing. They gave his family the choice of doing a second surgery that would further relieve pressure. The family elected to have Schumacher undergo the surgery. A scan a few hours after the surgery showed that the bruising appears to be under control

"We have received a transitional improvement in the pressure on the brain.

"We can't say he is out of danger but we have gained a bit of time," said Professor Jean-Francois Payen.

Schumacher is still in a medically induced coma and doctors say that could last weeks or even months until he is fully stabilized.

Seven-time Formula One Champion Michael Schumacher is in critical condition in a French hospital following a head injury that occurred when he hit a rock while skiing with his family at the Meribel ski resort on December 29. Schumacher was wearing a helmet, which his doctors attribute to his still being alive.

Following the injury, Schumacher was attended by medical crews and flown to a nearby hospital. After being stabilized, he was transported to the larger hospital in Grenoble, France, where doctors did surgery to reduce the pressure on his brain.

"We can say that he is fighting for his life. We judge him to be in a very serious condition,” said Professor Jean-Francois Payen, head of anesthesia at the hospital.

At a press conference on December 30, Schumacher's doctors said that he is in a medically induced coma, and they offered no prognosis for his recovery. The team of doctors is reevaluating his condition hour-by-hour, but at the moment, they do not believe that another surgery will be necessary. 

Schumacher's wife, Corinna, and his two children are at his bedside.
