Audi Q7 gets new engine range and transmission

Audi’s high-performance SUV, the Q7, had its engine range updated and is now fitted with a new 8-speed tiptronic transmission. The changes made by Audi make the model even more powerful and efficient.

The Q7 has received two new V6 gasoline units with different power outputs and a second-generation V6 TDI, with a V8 diesel completing the range. Combining forced induction and direct fuel injection, all the engines feature a high-performance recuperation system that recovers energy during braking.

The new 3.0 TFSI gasoline engine reflects the downsizing strategy of Audi with the engine’s displacement being replaced by supercharging. There are two versions of the supercharged available. The standard version has an output of 272 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds it can reach a top speed of 222 km/h.

The other 3.0 TFSI engine has a maximum power of 333 hp and torque of 440 Nm, between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. It is able to reach 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h.

The newly developed 3.0 TDI engine has set apart from its predecessor but kept the power. It has a power output of 240 hp and 550 Nm, maintained from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. The V6 diesel engine accelerates from a standstill up to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, being able to reach a maximum speed of 215 km/h. Still, it has an average fuel consumption of 7.4 litres per 100 km, which represent CO2 emissions of 195 g/km.

The V6 TDI engine is also available in a 3.0 TDI clean diesel version. In this case the exhaust emissions have been brought down to a minimum thanks to the sensors in the combustion chambers, a common-rail fuel injection system with a delivery pressure of up to 2,000 bar and a high-performance exhaust gas recirculation system. Developing 240 hp of power and 550 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 2.250 rpm it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km/h. The clean diesel version delivers an average fuel consumption of 8.4 litres per 100 km.

Finally the Q7 4.2 TDI also saw its efficency enhanced from 9.9 to 9.2 litres per 100 km with the installation of a 2,000-bar fuel injection system and with the minimized internal friction. The V8 diesel continues to produce 340 hp of power but saw its torque rise up to 800 Nm, between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. Its power enables the Q7 to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 242 km/h.

All the new engines have also been fitted with a new automatic transmission, which is able to lower fuel consumption by about five percent. Based on a six speed unit, the eight-speed tiptronic transmission saw another friction-clutch shift element being added. Being able to shift between eight ratios keeps the jumps in engine speed low, with the engine always running close to its ideal operating point.
