has announced that it sold its 1.5 millionth car this year, 10,000 more than Mercedes. It also means that Audi has met its 2015 sales goal two years ahead of schedule, and sales are up 7.4% over 2012.

Audi handed over the milestone model, an A3 Sportback, at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt.

“Our whole team is making Audi history today: In 2005, we set ourselves a very ambitious goal, and since then have sparked an unparalleled brand and model initiative. We will continue to write this success story and expand our product range from the current 49 to 60 models,” said Rupert Stadler, Chairman Audi AG.

The company has already set a goal of two million annual sales by 2020.

Audi’s growth has been rapid. In 2003, it sold 769,900 cars worldwide annually. That is nearly a doubling in sale in a decade.
