The DTM series for German touring cars had a race last weekend at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, which just happens to be directly across the street from BMW's headquarters and its museum. Not one to pass up an opportunity, BMW took the wraps off the concept for its DTM M3 that will begin competing next year.
BMW also announced that Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus would be at least two of the drivers for BMW's DTM team.
There will be three teams competing with the M3 next year: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.
It will be the first time BMW has taken part in the DTM series in 20 years since they campaigned the E30-chassis M3 in the late-80s and early-90s. That car won 40 races and took 150 podiums in five years.
BMW admits that the appearance of the car may change somewhat between now and its first race
The M3 DTM uses the required 4 liter V8 making about 480hp depending on the size of the restrictor. It is made from a carbon fiber reinforced plastic monocoque with a steel roll cage.
