This week's videos happen to show a classic rivalry: Germany vs. France. The first three videos show three eras of French racing cars. The second two show classic BMWs. Plus there is one video I threw in just for the sound.
Our first video shows highlights from a Renault 5 Turbo Cup race. It is a lot of fun seeing these little cars buzz around the track. Towards the end you can see the cars racing at Monaco and get a better idea of what they sound like.
The second video shows a 1906 Darraq on the track. What is most fascinating about this is watching the exposed vales and pushrods oscillate as the car runs. At about 2:25 into the video you can see it understeer off of the track because of its skinny tires and poor grip.
Our final French video is doubly show. It shows Patrick Depailler doing a very, very wet lap around Montreal. He almost immediately kicks the rear end out after driving through the first corner. After that nearly every corner is a glory of oversteer. Check out about 1:44 in, when Depailler has to dial in 90 degrees of opposite lock just to keep the car going straight.
Now we move across the border into Germany for a Group 2 BMW 635 CSI. It is not quite as impressive as Depailler, but the camera is oriented so you can really see the driver work. Plus, the sound is fantastic.
Next up is another video, but this is a little different. It is a Norma M20 chassis fitted with the 3.0 liter straight six from a BMW M3. From the sound, the engine has been heavily tuned, so it is hard to say how much power it is making now, but it sounds gorgeous.
The final video half qualifies as being French. It is a Norma M20 chassis again, which is built in France, but with a Judd engine, which is built in England. Likely, the owner put a Judd V8 from F3000 into the car, but it could also be a Judd endurance racing motor. Depending on setup, that means it is making between 450hp and 600hp. Just enjoy this short clip for the sound.
As always have a good weekend. We hope you like these videos, and let us know if there is a theme you would like to see in the future.
