Chrysler Produces 1 million Pentastar V6s in 18 months

Chrysler has passed the one million milestone for production of its Pentastar V6 that is installed in 11 vehicles made by Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler.

The Pentastar is a 60-degree,  3.6 liter V6 with between 285hp and 305hp depending on model. Torque varies between 260lb-ft and 268 lb-ft. With Chrysler's eight-speed automatic, it has been giving 31 miles per gallon fuel economy on the highway. It won the 10 Best award from Ward's Automotive this year too.

The Pentastar replaced six Chrysler V6 engines when it was introduced last year. Chrysler needs to manufacture just 32 parts for the Pentastar compared to 189 when it had to produce parts for six different V6 engines. The Pentastar is also 96lbs lighter than the previous 3.7 liter V6 that Chrysler made.

The Pentastar is made at Chrysler's factories in Trenton, Michigan, and Saltillo, Mexico.

I am confused about the 36 parts versus 189... I guess an engine has a lot more that this number of parts, so did Chrysler reach this number of parts made by itself by just outsourcing more?
