LED headlights have received certification from the European Commission, and they will be added to more models in the near future.
The commission says that cars using LED lights for the headlights, taillights and license plate light are enough to reduce CO2 emissions by 1g/km, and it is awarding Audi for the technological innovation.
LED headlights provide some advantage for fuel efficiency as well. The LEDs use 80W of power compared to 135W from traditional halogen lights. It translates to minor gains in fuel economy and increases in range when running purely on electric power in hybrids and EVs.

There is unique tech for each car. The A8 uses 76 LEDs in each headlight, while the A3 has 19 LEDs in each headlight. There are extra LEDs for cornering lights, daytime running lights and turn signals. Audi claims that the LEDs will last the life of the car without needing to be replaced.
