The state of Oregon in the US is know to be a bastion of organic food, renewable energy and sustainable living. The state has installed the US's first electric car charging stations along a roughly 200 mile section of the I-5 highway.
There are eight charging stations with each located about 25 miles apart. Each station has two standard charging locations and one quick charging DC location. The charging points are free to use for now.
The stations are managed by AeroVironment who also installed them.
Oregon and neighboring Washington already have plans to install 40 more charging locations. The goal is to have charging locations along all of I-5 from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.
"As the first state in the nation to establish an EV charging infrastructure along a major interstate, Oregon is leading the EV pathway and supporting adoption of the next phase in the evolution of transportation," said Pat Egan, chair of the Oregon Transportation Commission.
Later users of the charging points will have to register with AeroVironment to charge their cars. The company will issue a device the size of a key fob to allow subscribers to charge their car.
