have broken ground on a $1.75 billion joint factory in Changshu, China. The two companies also have approval from the Chinese government to form a joint venture to build and sell Jaguar Land Rover vehicles in China. In addition to the factory, the facility will research and development center and an engine production plant.
"Together, we will now begin working in close collaboration on our partnership plans to harness the capabilities of our respective companies, to produce relevant, advanced models for Chinese consumers," said Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr. Ralf Speth.
The two companies will build Jaguar and Land Rover cars specifically for the Chinese market.
The factory will be finished in 2014, and the engine plant will be finished later.
Jaguar Land Rover sales were up 60% in China last year and are up 80% in China in the first 10 months of this year. Having the joint production facility with Chery will mean that Jaguar Land Rover models will not face tariffs when sold in China.
