The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recognized the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the international governing body for motor sport, especially Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship. This means that the FIA will soon be a member of the IOC governing body and eventually be making decisions that affect the Olympics.
For the next two years, the FIA will be a provisional member, and as long as it can follow the rules of the Olympic Charter for two years, it will then become a full member.
"I am delighted the FIA is now part of the Olympic family as this is a confirmation of the strength of our sporting credentials as well as a recognition of the values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship which we actively share with the Olympic movement," said FIA President Jean Todt.
Do not take this is mean Formula 1 cars or WRC cars could be in the Olympics in the near future. What this more likely means is that the FIA will have to follow the athletic rules of the IOC, which would include rules against performance-enhancing drugs.
