While the 917 and 962 are certainly rare cars, they exist in private hands and if you go to enough vintage races, you will eventually see one. Granted, the specific 917k and 962 that Porsche will bring to Goodwood have very important provenance because they won at Le Mans. However, the 804 Formula 1 car is a completely different animal. Only four were made, and they were raced only during 1962. Porsche stopped racing in Formula 1 at the end of the 1962 season making the 804 Porsche's final car as a Formula 1 chassis constructor. It used a 1494cc, flat-eight engine producing 180hp at 9,200rpm. The car won the 1962 French Grand Prix at Rouen and took first and second at the non-championship Solituderennen in Stuttgart. Dan Gurney drove the car for both wins. After that season, Porsche moved to sports car and prototype racing.

The flat-eight engine was enlarged to 2.0 liters and placed in the 904904Porsche 904Germany, 1964 > 19642 versions

to create the 904-8 that raced in 1964 and 1965. In this trim, it produced 240hp. However, enlarging the engine caused it to become very unreliable. The 904-8 was entered in the 1964 1000km of Paris and 1965 Targa Florio, but it was not able to finish either race due to this unreliability.

The 917 was entered by Porsche Salzburg in the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans and driven by Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann to win the race. There were 17 917s entered at Le Mans that year, and 59 917s in all variants were eventually built.

The 962 at Goodwood was raced by the Rothmans Porsche team and driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck, Derek Bell and Al Holbert to win at Le Mans. Porsche built 148 examples of the 962 and its shorter wheelbase sibling the 956.

Finally, Porsche is going to celebrate the 911 GT3 Cup911 GT3 CupPorsche 911 GT3 CupGermany, 2009 > present3 photos
car and racing series that it began in 1998. However, the Porsche Cup in general goes back to 1986. Porsche has produced over 2,000 GT3 Cup cars since 1998, and it will be showing several of the cup cars at Goodwood.

Porsche's Origin web site will be producing videos showing the cars on display, and it has produced the video below to promote Goodwood.
