Porsche considering a comeback to Formula One

Porsche considering a comeback to Formula One

There is a possibility to see Porsche making a return to Formula One. The information was revealed on Friday by Porsche’s new chairman Matthias Mueller Friday at the Paris Motor Show.

Mueller’s expectations are that in the near future his company's motorsport activities, which join Porsche and Audi through its tie-up with the Volkswagen Group, will include both top-level sportscars and F1.

The chairman expects either Porsche or Audi to have an LMP1 car, while the othe brand would enter the F1 World Championship.

Porsche seems like the logical choice to make a comeback to F1 as they competed in the championship until 1991, while Audi has already proven its credentials in the Le Mans prototype class, where the brand has been competing since 1999. Besides the four rings brand is developing the new R18 for 2011.

To Autocar’s website Muller said "With LMP1, there are two classes and two brands - Audi and Porsche. We do not like to both go into LMP1; that is not so funny,"

He added "So therefore we have to discuss whether it makes better sense for one of the brands to go into LMP1, and the other brand into F1. So we will have a round-table to discuss the pros and cons."

With all-new engine regulations being introduced in 2013, we shouldn’t see Porsche coming back to Formula One until then.
