Porsche Displaying 70s Classics as Techno Classica

Porsche is displaying several of its classic 911s from the 70s at the Techno Classica in Essen, Germany, from March 21-25. It will be showing off its successful line of RS cars from the era including the 1972 911 RS 2.7, RSR and 1974 RSR Turbo.

All of the car's come from Porsche's musuem, but the RS 2.7 is a little more special. The specific car was compeletely restored by the Porsche Classic workshop. It will also have a second, even earlier 911 at the Techno Classica that is being restored by Porsche Classic for a customer.

The 1973 RS 2.7 is among the most valuable and highly prized 911 variants ever made. It was basically a homologation special to allow Porsche to enter into sports car racing. Normal 911s at the time used a 2.4 liter engine with 190hp. The RS added a little over 300cc of displacement bring power up to 210ps. It also got a stiffer suspension, ducktail spoiler, larger brakes and the rear was built with wider fenders to accept wider wheels. The weight of a standard RS 2.7  was 1075kg, which is a little more than the 1050kg of a 911S, but Porsche offered an optional lightweight package on the RS that dropped the weight an extra 100kg mostly by using thinner steel and glass. Porsche built 1580 examples.

For racers, there was an even more extreme version of the 2.7 RS available in 73 called the RSR. It used a bored version of the engine to increase displacement to 2.8 liters. Power grew to 308hp, and weight was cut to 840kg. Porsche built just 49 of them, and one won the 12 Hours of Sebring that year.

For 1974, Porsche upgraded the car further to a full 3.0 liter displacement bring power up to 270ps. These cars nearly twice what a 2.7RS had. It used the brakes from the 917 race car and weight was cut to 900kg.

Also in 1974, Porsche radically changed the RSR from the year before. It offered the RSR Turbo that used a 2.1 liter turbo engine producing between 460hp and 490hp depending on desired boost. The engine was made smaller to fit in the racing rules at the time for turbocharged vehicles.

Porsche will also be showing off its line of restoration parts at the Techno Classica as well. New for this year includes the orange-bar Porsche badge that was used until 1974, complete fenders and Fuchs wheels. Porsche will also be showing off its personalization program on a customized 991-chassis 911.
