Rumormill: Porsche Macan Getting Twin-Turbocharged V6 in Top Trim

The Macan will be Porsche's compact SUV below the Cayenne

Porsche's smallest SUV will launch in Europe next fall to compete with the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, and the first rumors about the powerplants for the Porsche Macan are starting to come out. The top of the range will likely get a twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6l engine from the Panamera and Cayenne. A hybrid version with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and electric motor is also likely.

The turbocharged V6 will likely make about 370hp and 400lb-ft of torque thanks to two, sequential turbos bolted to the same 3.6l V6 already found in the Panamera and Cayenne that produces 296hp. The standard 3.6l V6 will also be an engine option.

The base engine will be a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with about 220hp and an available 2.0l turbocharged diesel with 190hp. For more economy-minded buyers Porsche will offer the turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with a hybrid.

The Macan will offer all-wheel drive with a torque vectoring rear axle with the V6 mounted longitudinally in the front with either the new, seven-speed manual or seven-speed PDK. To provide more economy, the Macan will have start/stop tech, brake energy recuperation and the ability to turn off ancillary engine functions to increase fuel economy.

It sits on the same platform as the Q5 but meant to be more sporty with a retuned suspension and electro-mechanical steering.

“We’ve surprised even ourselves. It drives incredibly well and, from what we’ve seen from the competition, will be the most sporting car in its class,” said Porsche development boss Wolfgang Hatz.
