Toyota's pickups are getting the prime spot at its display at this year's SEMA show. The company brought tuned versions of the Tacoma and Tundra prepared to go seriously off-road. It brought two other cars along too: a track-ready version of the Yaris and a pace car Camry.
Toyota brought three versions of the Tacoma to SEMA. The first is the Long Beach Racers Tacoma built for off-road racing. It has a heavy-duty roll cage, 60mm race shocks and 35in tired mounted on 16in wheels.
The second version of the Tacoma is Oakley Surf Tacoma. The truck uses the TRD supercharged to produce 304hp from the Tacoma's V6. It has a custom roof rack for hauling surf boards with storage for other supplies below.
The third Tacoma is built by Toyota's in-house tuner TRD. Toyota intends the car for limited series production. The truck is tuned for desert racing with a TRD suspension and a 4.0 liter V6. The truck has 60mm shocks at the front and 50mm shocks in the rear.
As a larger truck, there is also the Toyota Ultimate Motocross Truck made from the Tundra pickup. The truck was designed by West Coast Customs. It comes with a 5.7 liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission. Modifications include 18in wheels with meaty tires, rough-texture paint, a rough rack, fold-up bed sides, a winch, air compressor and ramp to load motorcycles.
Toyota also brought two cars with them to SEMA. The Yaris B-Spec Club Racer is tuned for SCCA B-spec racing. The car has been painted to be reminiscent of the Toyota GT-1 car that raced at Le Mans.
Toyota also brought the Camry pace car for the 2012 Daytona 500 that will lead the race on February 26.
All together this is a pretty disappointing collection of vehicles from Toyota. Hopefully, next year with the FT-86, Toyota will have a more interesting display.
