in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2016 and double production from the factory to 100,000 units a year. The factory will get a €135 million upgrade and add 800 employees to build the Rav4. The Russian-built models will be sold exclusively in Russia and Belarus.

Toyota said the decision is linked to the strong sales of the Rav4 in Russia. It is the bestselling C-segment crossover in Russia, and Toyota’s bestselling vehicle there.

“This decision is a sign of trust for our employees and recognition of TMMR’s efforts for the last 6 years to produce high quality Toyota vehicles. RAV4 introduction is key to our sustainable growth strategy in Russia,” said Yoshinori Matsunaga, Toyota Russia General Director.

Since the Saint Petersburg factory opened in 2007, it has only built the CamryToyota Camry 8 Japan, 2011 > present18 versions
