will invest a cumulative 1 billion pounds ($1.5 billion) over the next 10 years into researching cleaner engines. The government will provide half of the money, and the companies will provide the other half.

Some of the money will also go toward creating the Advanced Propulsion Centre, which will conduct some of the research, and the entire project will employ 30,000 engineers.

"The UK automotive sector has been incredibly successful in recent times, with billions of pounds of investment and new jobs. With the next generation of vehicles set to be powered by radically different technologies we need to maintain this momentum and act now," said Great Britain Business Secretary Vince Cable.

The UK has had 16 consecutive months of rising sales, while the general EU market has only had one month of higher sales in the last 13 months.
