V6 turbos might come to F1

Formula 1 might move to turbocharged V6 engines, Autosport is reporting.

Currently there is a stalemate between teams, manufacturers and Formula 1 organizers over the future of the series's power plants. The current plan, mostly pushed by organizers, was for 1.6 liter, four-cylinder engines to take over in 2013. However, teams have been struggling to find a compromise that would better meet their needs.

Unrevealed sources told Autosport that engine manufacturers have proposed a compromise for turbocharged, 1.6 liter V6 engines that would take over 2014. The new engines would retain the KERS system.

The FIA has agreed to postpone new engine regulations if teams could unanimously agree on a new specification.
