One thing that you cannot deny about Sebastian Vettel is that he knows how to string together an amazingly fast lap. He has done it again at the Hungaroring today taking the pole for the race tomorrow in Hungary.
For the first two portions of qualifying, Vettel stayed in by keeping his lap times in the 1:21 range, but in the final period he cut almost a second-and-a-half off and took pole with a 1:19.815 lap. Vettel had the pole last year in Hungary but squandered his lead to take third in the race.
Behind Vettel, are both McLarens. Lewis Hamilton was the only other driver in the 1:19s. Button was only a tenth of Hamilton's pace but still ended up third on the grid.
To complete its reputation this season of being about fifth in the pack, Ferrari qualified fourth and fifth. There was just 15 thousandths of a second between Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, but they were well off the pace of the McLarens – about three tenths off to be precise.
Compared to his performance this season, Mark Webber had a relatively disappointing performance. He only made it to sixth on the grid.
Rounding out the top nine were Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil and Michael Schumacher.
Lap times were down by over a second this year over last year's race. Vettel took pole last year with a 1:18 lap, and nearly everyone was a second faster last year compared to this year.
