History, development and general characteristics

The first generation Audi A4, also known as the B5 A4, started being produced in November 1994. This compact executive model was internally codenamed B5 because of the platform it was built upon.

Audi eventually gave the car a bit of a cosmetic facelift, which would be seen at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, where a slightly updated Audi A4 was presented. Production of the first generation A4 was halted in 2001 in order for this car to be replaced by the second generation model.

Engine and Transmission

The A4 has a front-mounted engine and either standard front-wheel drive or ‘quattro’ four-wheel drive system.

The range of petrol engines available for the first series A4 goes from a 1.6-liter unit to a 2.8-liter one, with power outputs between 99 and 190 hp. Among those, there was a turbocharged version of the 1.8-liter engine, which produced 148 hp.

A turbocharged 1.9-liter diesel engine was also available, with power output options between 74 and 113 hp. A new diesel engine was introduced in the A4 line-up in 1997 – a turbocharged (TDI) 2.5-liter V6 unit with 148 hp.

When the Audi A4 was launched, three types of transmission were available: the customer could either choose a 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic or 5-speed automatic gearbox. In 1997, a 6-speed manual transmission was added to the options.
