With the A8 L Audi presented a larger version of its A8 model. The long-wheelbase version of the four rings brand A8 is the first to be first powered by a twelve-cylinder engine. By late 2010 it also offered the full range of engines currently available for the A8.
The Audi A8 L has been enlarged by 130 mm in terms of overall length and wheelbase, with a total of 5.267 mm and 3.122 mm respectively. The width has remained the same of the standard model but the height has increased by 2 mm to 1.462 mm.
The larger version of the A8 has seen some subtle changes as compared to the standard model design. It received a single-frame radiator grille with integral grid structure that has a high-gloss black paint finish and chromed horizontal bars. The chromed inserts and chromed applications on the exterior mirrors distinguish the A8 L from the standard A8 as well as the exhaust system with two trapezoidal-pattern tailpipe trims integrated into the rear bumper.
The biggest feature of the A8 L is the space that has been created for the rear-seat passengers. In fact the extra length was used in this area creating a more comfortable and opulent space. The back doors have also been enlarged for more convenient entry.
As for its performance the A8 was launched with a thoroughly revised W12 engine. Its displacement has been increased, and gasoline direct injection boosts its output and its efficiency.
With an output of 500 hp the 6.3 FSI engine produces a maximum torque of 625 Nm, at 3250 rpm. This engines gives the A8 L W12 quattro the same kind of performance expected of a sports car. It can accelerate from a standing postion up to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h. In terms of consumption in the EU cycle test it consumes 12.0 liters per 100 kilometers.
The Audi A8 L is fitted with an eight-speed tiptronic which contributes to enhance the efficiency of the long-wheelbase vehicle.
