For 2011, BMW developed a new generation of 2.0-litre petrol engines and the new BMW X1 xDrive28i was the first model to be available with the new technology.

The new engine generation is part of BMW's EfficientDynamics strategy and delivers lower fuel consumption and emissions at increased performance levels. For the BMW X1 xDrive28i, the new engine leads to a reduced fuel consumption of 7.9 litres/100 km, an improvement of 1.5 litres and CO2 emissions of 183 g/km, down by 38 g as compared to the earlier model.

Also the standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics technology including Brake Energy Regeneration, an Optimum Shift Indicator, the Auto Start-Stop function, on-demand control of auxiliary units, contributes to more fuel efficient driving with the new X1 xDrive28i.

It is the first four-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and delivers an increased output of 180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 rpm – 55 kW, displacement of 1,997 cc and rated torque of 350 Nm. The TwinPower Turbo technology allows the four-cylinder engine to develop power levels, naturally aspirated engines only achieve through more cylinders and larger displacement.

The engine features an all-aluminium crankcase, a high-performance twin-scroll turbocharging system, High Precision Injection direct petrol injection with solenoid injectors, and the latest version of the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC variable valve control system.

Besides efficiency, also performance of the X1 has been enhanced, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h improved by 0.7 seconds (automatic: 0.3 seconds) to 6.1 seconds (automatic: 6.5 seconds). The model comes with standard six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new X1 has as standard BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system calibrated for optimised driving dynamics. Performance Control is optionally available. The electronically controlled multi-plate clutch continuously varies the drive power split between the front and rear axles. The all-wheel-drive system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and responds to signs of oversteer or understeer. The result is improved traction in slippery conditions or away from surfaced roads.

BMW also offers an optional M Sports package for all BMW X1 model versions. The package comprises suspension, exterior and interior components to enhance the vehicle’s sporty and agile driving characteristics. Some of the features are a sports suspension calibration, 17-inch or 18-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels, an M Aerodynamics package and sports seats upholstered in cloth/alcantara.
