Cadillac has given the CTS a radical redesign for the third generation at the New York Auto Show that includes a brand new front end and a new twin-turbo V6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also drops weight compared to last year’s model.

The third-generation CTS shares a platform with the ATS with rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. It will be offered with three engines, two of which are new to the CTS.

The biggest change to the exterior is the new front end that is significantly blunter than previous generations. The other obvious change is the L-shaped LED running lights that bend down from the hood over the headlights to the front bumper.

The engine options include the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with 272hp, the 3.6-liter V6 with 321hp and the new twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 with 420hp. The twin-turbo engine is only available on the new CTS Vsport.

The latest generation is 5in (127mm) longer and has a 1.2in longer wheelbase than the current generation. The roof has been lowered an inch. Despite the larger size, weight has fallen. A magnetic suspension will also be optionally available.

The new Vsport trim also gets 18in wheels with performance tires or 19in wheels with all-season tires, a quicker steering ratio, Brembo brakes, better cooling, magnetic suspension and electronic limited-slip differential. Cadillac says that it is enough to get the car to 60mph in 4.6 seconds.

For improved fuel economy and aerodynamics, the grill has active shutters.

Interior options include eight trim choices including several types of wood, carbon fiber and aluminum. It is also available with fake leather, real leather and full semi-aniline leather.

All versions will come standard with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system with an 8in touch screen. There is also an available 12.3in screen.

Other interior options will include 20-way power front seats, motorized cup holder in the center console, heated and cooled front seats, Bose stereo and automatic parking assist. Buyers can also spec the Driver Awareness Package that includes adaptive cruise control, collision alerts for the entire car, lane departure warning and rear camera.

Cadillac

Cadillac was founded in 1902 by Henry Martyn Leland from the remains of Henry Ford’s car company. After financial disputes with its bankers, Ford left taking its name, and Leland stepped in, persuading the bankers to carry on with the carmaker. A new name was needed, and inspired in the French explorer that discovered Detroit in the beginning of the 17th century, Leland chose the explorer’s name to baptize the company: Cadillac.
