The 7 (or Seven) is Caterham’s most popular model. The lightweight sports car, based on Lotus 7, was launched in 1973. Caterham 7 is sold in kits or already fully assembled. The two-seater is very popular in the United Kingdom for The Lotus/Caterham 7 commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2007. This model was banned from racing in the 1960s in the USA and in the 1970s in UK to be “too fast to race”. Both bans have been lifted, but Caterham adapted the line as a slogan of the car.

Caterham was established in 1973 by Graham Nearn, after having been one of the most important dealers of Lotus 7 cars throughout the 1960’s. Once Caterham as an independent manufacturer was established, and given Lotus’ intention of discontinuing the ‘7’ model, Nearn acquired the design rights of this car from Chapman (still in 1973) so as to carry on with the production as a Caterham model.
