Review

In 2010 Chevrolet released the first images of the production-ready second-generation Aveo. The small car had its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show 2010, part of a growth-campaign by Chevrolet on the European markes.

As the previously launched Spark, the new Aveo looks to conquer the hearts of the younger customers with its sporty hatch look. The sedan and HB5 hatchback versions reached European markets in the summer 2011.

In order to meet European drivers’ tastes both in terms of design and dynamics the 2010 Chevrolet Aveo has benefited from an extensive development program. Each European market gets tailored final specifications for the new Aveo.

2012 Updates

For the 2012 model year in Europe, Chevrolet added a new Aveo diesel. It uses a 1.3 liter, diesel engine that comes in two states of tune: either 75hp or 95hp, and it uses 3.6l/100km and 4.1l/100km respectively. The 95hp variant has lower emissions at 95g/km and the 75hp version emits 97g/km.

Chevrolet also announced an Aveo powered by liquified petroleum gas (LPG) for the same year. The LPG engine in the Aveo will be 1.2 liters.

These updates appear as Chevrolet's strategy to improve its European image by bringing better, more efficient vehicles.

Engines and transmissions

In the summer of 2011 new Aveo was launched with an available range of four cylinder petrol and a diesel engine, which featured latest technologies such as variable valve timing, double continuous variable cam phasing and common rail fuel injection for the diesels.

A 1.2 liter gasoline unit is available in two displacements rated at 70 and 86 hp, whereas the 1.4 liter and the 1.6 liter motor deliver 100 and 115 hp, respectively. On a combined cycle, the 1.2 liter gasoline engine (86 hp) consumes 5.1 liter/100 km, while emitting 119 g/km CO2.

The Aveo is the first small Chevrolet in Europe to be fitted with a 1.3 liter diesel engine, which comes with Start/Stop technology, a common-rail fuel injection system and electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (with intercooler).

The Aveo is also the first small Chevrolet to sport a six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission are of 5- or 6-speed, depending on engine choice.

Body and design

Entering the very competitive small car segment, the Aveo front look is dominated by the exposed twin-headlamps and dual port grille. It features compact taut body panels with a rising shoulder line, short rear overhangs and 'hidden' rear door handles now placed in the c-pillar. Part of the new Chevrolet design language, the 'body in, wheels out' profile is also present on the new Aveo.

The new sedan is set apart from the hatchback by its tail lamps that are carried in a dual element lens.

The interior incorporates Chevrolet's traditional dual cockpit. It offers multiple storage spaces in the center stack and a trunk volume of 502 liters. It also has two gloveboxes, the second one of which is located in the mid-instrument panel and has outlets for USB and auxiliary devices for connectivity of various electronic appliances. All devices can be operated through the steering wheel controls or radio interfaces and Bluetooth functionality.
