Chevrolet revealed the second generation of the Volt at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show (NAIAS). The electric model with range extension has a sportier design, offers an electric range of 80 km, in addition to a greater efficiency and acceleration, compared to the previous model.
Powertrain
The second-generation Volt receives the new Voltec propulsion system which was developed in accordance with the driving behavior of the drivers of the first model generation. Chevrolet says that thanks to the new Voltec system, the Volt will offer a range of 643km and with regular charging drivers can be able to travel more than 1600km with only a fuel tank.
The Voltec system includes a battery, a driving unit, a range extension engine and the power electronics. Regarding the battery, the new Volt uses the latest technology available to achieve a reduction in the number of cells needed and a weight reduction of 9.8kg.
The same process happened with the two-motor system that equips the Volt, which has succeeded in increasing the efficiency and performance also permitted to reduce noise, vibration and weight by 45kg compared to the first generation. According to Chevrolet, the new Volt can reach 100 km/h in about 8.4 seconds.
Design
For the second generation Volt, Chevrolet chose to develop a more sporty design through a long process of testing in the wind tunnel. The new generation shape is inspired by the muscular physique of athletes and the natural shapes of dunes made by the wind. The brand has chosen yet to give enough attention to the choice of materials and colors, in order to give the model a more premium look.
