Review

The 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager introduced more than 30 new features, ranging from new multimedia systems to the Swivel ‘n Go seating system.

Engines, transmissions and performance

The 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager offers a choice of two engines: a 3.8-litre V-6 engine that produces 142 kW (190 bhp) at 5,200 rpm and 305 Nm (225 lb.-ft.) of torque at 4,000 rpm, and an 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 120 kW (161 bhp) at 3,800 rpm and 360 Nm (265 lb.-ft.) of torque at 1800 rpm.

2.8-litre CRD

The 2.8-litre CRD engine provides a weight saving of approximately six per cent and achieves increased cam belt life (durability of 140,000 kilometres) and features Piezo fuel injectors and a 2000-bar common-rail fuel system to improve fuel-system speed and control.

A forged steel crankshaft features eight counterweights compared to the prior crankshaft, which had four. A structural oil pan assists in reducing noise, vibration and harshness on the engine.

The Variable Geometry Turbocharger has an electronically controlled actuator as opposed to a pneumatic actuator on the previous engine. This provides improved cold launch performance, and it also allows the turbocharger to spool up faster from idle, minimising turbo lag and providing good low-end and high-end torque.

3.8-litre petrol

The 3.8-litre petrol engine is a 60-degree V6 featuring sequential, multi-port fuel injection, an iron block and aluminium cylinder heads.

Transmissions

With the introduction of the fifth generation Grand Voyager, these engines are mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The six-speed gearboxes higher numerical first gear launches the new MPV more briskly than a four- or five-speed transmission. It also provides smaller steps between ratios, which means the engine speed changes less with each shift and makes the shifts feel smoother and engages a more appropriate ratio for any driving situation.

Design

Exterior Design

The Chrysler Grand Voyager exterior design shows clean lines for better aerodynamics. It shares many design cues with the Chrysler 300C such as a similar body-to-glass proportion, simple wheel flares, sleek pillars, chrome accents and detailed ornamentation.

Chrysler brand exterior design elements include a distinctive front end with the “face of Chrysler” Grille featuring the Chrysler winged badge and quad headlamps. Chrome accents include the belt moulding, front and rear fascia spears, roof-rack side rails, mirror cap and door handles.

The Chrysler Grand Voyager is available in six exterior colours: Bright Silver Metallic Clearcoat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearlcoat, Dark Titanium Metallic Clearcoat, Inferno Red Crystal Pearlcoat, Blackberry Pearlcoat and Stone White Clearcoat.

Interior

The Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system means the Grand Voyager can be transformed  from a seven-passenger people carrier to a two-person cargo vehicle. All the seats store in the floor.

Optional on the Chrysler Grand Voyager Limited is the Swivel ’n Go™ seating system. It features second-row covered floor storage bins and second-row Captain’s chairs that swivel 180 degrees to face rearward for conversational seating. A removable table fits between the second and third rows. A one-touch power-stowing third-row seat with power recline can be adjusted into four different positions with a single push of a button.

The interior features a combination of satin finishes and Elm Burl or Medrona Burl wood on the instrument panel and door trim. The lower trim colour on the instrument panel and door trim is Light Shale while the upper trim colour on these components is Dark Slate. The seating surface for LX and Touring is Dark slate with stain and odour resist materials as standard equipment. Unique Royale leather trimmed seating surface augmented with Preferred Suede is standard in Grand Voyager Limited in Dark Slate.

A halo lighting package emits a soft greenish-blue glow along the overhead console but doesn’t interfere with the driver’s vision. Directional pinpoint LED lights are available for all rows of passengers, while convenience lights illuminate areas such as the map pockets and door sills.

Other interior enhancements in the Chrysler Grand Voyager interior include second-row power windows, second- and third-row sunshades (on Limited models only), a removable and rechargeable flashlight in the rear cargo area and a new D-pillar-mounted power liftgate button. The power sliding doors and liftgate have been improved for faster and quieter operation.
