Gottlieb Daimler was focused on fitting his engine to the largest possible range of different uses. On July 29, 1888 he filed an application for a "fire pump with engine drive" with the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin. DRP (German Reich Patent) no. 46779 was granted on the following year, on April 15th.
The pump has two cylinders, a total displacement of 3041 cc and an output of 540 liters/min – 6 hp.
This idea would be an enormous progress for the fire brigades. The fire pump was used for the first time in 1892. It worked for five hours, sucking water and pumping it 20 meters high into the burning roof structure of a factory producing bed feathers in Cannstatt, near Stuttgart.
The pump was later sold to the Erfurt fire brigade where it did valuable service until 1925.
