The third generation received extensive updates, and a new longer wheelbase version was also introduced, the Expedition EL/Max, in order to replace the discontinued Ford Excursion. Design

Expedition's new design is inspired by Ford's F-Series truck which improved its capability, functionality and toughness. It features a three-bar grille, reminiscent of the F-Series truck, a raised powerdome hood, smoother sides and larger wheel lips and a new flush cladding profile. New dual-beam headlamps feature the Ford-themed design with the integrated side-marker lights wrapping around into the front fenders.

In the interior the seats were redesigned to offer improved contours, larger bolsters, softer cushions and upgraded materials.

Chassis and engine

Ford Expedition's new generation comes with a new chassis to enhance the car's durability. It uses a revised front geometry and increased box section thickness. The new chassis features a new front suspension, front frame section and modular front-end construction.

Expedition is powered by Ford’s 5.4-liter Triton™ V8. With single overhead cams, three valves per cylinder and variable cam timing and rated at 300 horsepower and 494 Nm of torque, Expedition can tow up to 9,200 pounds.

The Triton™ engine is mated with a new standard 6-speed automatic transmission. The 6R transmission has manual shift capability, and its wide 6.04:1 gear ratio and two overdrive gears deliver improved performance and fuel economy over the 4-speed it replaces.
