Review

Ford S-Max is a 5-door minivan created especially for the European market. First launched at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, it sits between Galaxy and the C-Max in terms of size. For 2010 the model received a facelift and was the first car in Ford's line-up to feature the make's Kinetic Design which includes angular headlights, trapezoidal grilles and large wheelarches.

Design and facelift

The S-Max has a unique combination of sportiness and functionality that proves that a family car can still have a dynamic styling and design. For the 2010 facelift, the model received a revised three-dimensional bonnet design that was combined with a front facia, which features a bolder lower trapezoidal grille. This was also the first model from Ford of Europe to have LED daytime running lights, a standard on Titanium and Titanium S trims and an optional feature on Trend. In the rear the tailgate and lower facia were also redesigned, with revised standard LED tail and brake lights and a strip that sits between the rear lights and is embossed with the S-Max logo. The Titanium S trim comes with new 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior was designed to provide a comfortable and sporty driving position. The Ford FoldFlatSystem comes as standard for the 2nd and, if fitted, 3rd row seats and offers a multifunctional overhead console with sunglasses holder and child watch mirror. Other new features include a panorama roof, LED interior lighting and a new sound system.

Powertrain

Ford Motor Company's latest family of engines features direct petrol injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing to maximise combustion efficiency, resulting in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 20 per cent compared to conventional petrol engines with a similar power output.

The Ford EcoBoost 2.0-litre SCTi petrol engine is an all-new state-of-the-art four cylinder with 200 PS. It features an advanced combustion system, which brings new levels of performance and fuel efficiency to petrol engines in this power range. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost SCTi engine has a maximum output of 203 PS (149kW) at 5,500rpm, combined with maximum torque of 300 Nm delivered across a broad 1,750–4,500 rpm range. It is available exclusively with the six-speed Ford PowerShift double wet-clutch automatic transmission. The S-MAX with the new powertrain achieves 0-100km/h acceleration in 8.5 seconds, while top speed is 221 km/h.

In addition to the new 2.0 litre EcoBoost SCTi engine, a broad range of different Stage V compliant diesel and petrol powertrains is available for the new S-MAX and Galaxy models.

The 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine has been reworked to match Stage V emission regulations and is now available with either 115 or 140PS as well as a new 163 PS version. The two most powerful engines are also available with the optional Ford PowerShift six-speed double-clutch transmission.

Efficiency

Even with such responsive performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions are also significantly improved with the new EcoBoost SCTi engine. Compared to the previous 161PS 2.3-litre automatic powertrain of the original S-MAX, CO2 emissions are reduced by 19 per cent to 189g/km, even though the new 2.0-litre SCTi engine has over 25 per cent more power. This translates into a combined fuel economy of just 8.11 l/100 km, and an extra urban 6.4 l/100 km.

The new 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engines also deliver impressive fuel economy and CO2 performance. With a combined 5.7 l/100 km and average CO2 emission of 152 g/km.
