Review

In 2014 Ford introduced the second generation S-Max. The second generation offers a sportier driving and a cabin with better trim levels. Among the highlights of the second generation seven-seat MPV are an entirely new chassis, new engines, an optional all-wheel drive system and an even more flexible interior.

The S-Max is based on the CD4 platform structure that is shared with the future Mondeo and the Edge SUV.

Although the dimensions of the S-Max were kept intact, either exterior or interior, the model gets totally new components. The vehicle receives a redesigned MacPherson strut front suspension compared to the previous generation and even a new rear integrated link suspension.

Engines

The range of petrol engines includes a 160hp 1.5-liter Ecoboost engine, combined with a manual six-speed gearbox and a 240hp 2.0 Ecoboost engine with an automatic transmission.

On the diesel side the S-Max is equipped with the 2.0-liter TDCi, with 120hp, 150hp and 180hp outputs. The engine is offered with a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, but a dual-clutch Powershift transmission is available with the 150hp and 180hp variants.

The two most powerful versions of the diesel range are optionally available with the same all-wheel drive system available on the Mondeo and the Edge.

Design

The design of the second gen model was supervised by the European department, since this is a global but still very focused on the European market.

The front of the S-Max gets the new image of the Ford family, which debuted with the Mondeo, based on the 2011 coupe concept Evos. The LED headlights have the optional capability to automatically dim some sections to avoid dazzle other drivers.

The sides have two strong lines and the rear has more pronounced shoulders with narrow horizontal headlights and a chrome center bar.

The top Titanium versions also received a rear diffuser with integrated exhaust outlets.

Regarding the interior, the S-Max Ford has used higher quality materials in order to offer a more sophisticated and luxurious cabin. The model also receives simple, useful and easy to use technology.
