Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) was founded by some ex-General Motors engineers in Livonia, Michigan, USA, in 1992, under the name of Trans2. The company was subsequently bought by a group of investors from North Dakota and In December 1997 it was reorganized under the name Global Electric Motorcars (GEM), and was relocated at Fargo, North Dakota, USA. GEM produces low speed electric cars known as Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). The first car was launched in 1998. In December 2000 GEM was bought by DaimlerChrysler Corporation and remains a subsidiary of the Chrysler Group LLC.
