GMC Sierra (United States of America, 1998-present)

The GMC Sierra is a full-size pickup truck from General Motors, also sold as Chevrolet Silverado. Both models are almost identical, the Sierra being promoted as the more luxurious model.

The 1500 light pickup truck versions of the Silverado and Sierra were launched for the 1999 model year while the HD (Heavy Duty) versions followed in 2001. The HD is a strengthened version of the light-duty, and available in the 1500HD, 2500HD, and 3500 models. The HD models are primarily used for towing and high-weight cargo. The light duty 1500 versions are available as 2-door regular cab, 3 or 4-door extended cab and 4-door crew cab. Three cargo beds are available, the short box, standard box, and long box.

In 2005 GM launched a hybrid version for the Silverado as well as for the Sierra. It was the first hybrid passenger vehicle by General Motors available since 2005 for commercial customers and from 2006/07 for all car buyers across North America. This version was discontinued in 2008. In 2009 it was succeeded by a new generation Silverado/Sierra pickup truck offering a Two-Mode Hybrid powertrain. The all-new Silverado/Sierra generation was launched for the 2007 model year. Changes included a reviewed exterior, interior, frame, suspension and a power increases on some engines.
