The refreshed 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was first revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, and on March 5 European buyers will get to see the updated truck at the Geneva Motor Show. They will have to wait until the third quarter to be able to buy one, though.
The 2014 Grand Cherokee is a major revision that gives the truck a new front end, new interior equipment and a few mechanical tweaks.
The new front end includes narrower headlights with integrated LED running lights and optional bi-xenon illumination. The grill is also shorter, and the fog lights have been moved higher. At the rear, there are new LED taillights, a rear spoiler and a tailgate with more visibility.
The interior now is available with Chrysler's 8.4in touchscreen UConnect infotainment system and a 7in information screen in the instrument panel. The steering wheel has been redesigned to handle to new infotainment system, and many of the controls are mounted there. The new transmission means that the gearshift has a new design with a leather-covered handle.
The biggest mechanical update is the new eight-speed automatic transmission that is available with two different all-wheel drive systems. The new transmission is available with all of the engines. Chrysler has not revealed fuel consumption figures for the new transmission in Europe yet, but in the US it improved highway fuel economy by about 10%.
There is also an optional air suspension and an optional Selec-Terrain traction management system. The system uses a rotary dial to select the driving conditions. It also features uphill and downhill modes that allows the driver to control the throttle and brakes from the steering-wheel mounted paddles that would usually be used to shift the transmission.
Jeep also added radar sensors to the front to control the forward collision warning and crash mitigation systems.
