The Lancia Stratos prototype of 1971 debuted at the Turin Motor Show. Built from scratch as a rally car, its success on the tracks wasn’t a surprise.
Bertone actually did this prototype without Lancia knowledge and he had to fight to get a contract. When he didn’t hear from Lancia after the Turin Motor Show, he actually took the car to Lancia’s factory, passing under the security gates, since the car was low enough, and eventually left with a contract.
topThe prototype shown at 1971 was slightly different from the one shown in the previous year. Marcello Gandini, head designer at Bertone was responsible for the body styling. The car was shown in a vibrant red. The visibility of the car was perfect when it comes to the front view but the rear view was null, since it didn’t matter for rallying anyway.
